Best Silk Sheets 2023

Jul 01, 2023Jul 01, 2023

Slipping into a set of silk sheets with a sleek feel and lavish sensation can feel like the ultimate nighttime upgrade. Silk sheets can make your bed look instantly luxurious thanks to the fabric's inherent sheen. Not only do they look great, but they are a natural fiber that’s lightweight and breathable, which can help prevent overheating. Plus the best silk sheets have a slight cool-to-the-touch feel, making crawling into bed on a warm day that much more grand.

Silk sheets can help you keep cool during the night while making your bed feel more luxurious.

A good set of silk sheets should feel soft, look lustrous and help you get a restful night's sleep. Real silk sheets also come at a much higher price tag than other types of sheets; many of the best cotton sheets are more affordable than the silk options on this list. As these sheets are an investment, you’ll want to make sure you’re getting the best silk sheets for your money. Below, I’ve used my background in fabrics to put together a list of the best silk sheets (and other options with a silky feel but lower price, so there’s something for everyone). These are our picks.

Lily Silk

Materials: 100% Mulberry silk | Mattress depth: Up to 16 inches | Sizes: All standard sizes

Silk’s weight is measured in a unique unit of measure: momme. Many sets aren’t available in an array of thicknesses, but Lily Silk’s sheets come in 19, 22 and 25 momme silk—the 22 momme version is a good middle ground in terms of weight. This momme won’t feel too thick or thin, making them great for year-round use. Although I haven’t tried the sheets, I’ve tested Lily’s 22 momme silk pajamas, which are likely made of the same material as the sheets. The silk feels smooth, and the pajamas easily withstood multiple wash cycles—and I suspect the sheets would be no different. The set is made with Mulberry silk, which is a high quality silk. You can also get creative with your bed since the flat and fitted sheets are sold separately, allowing you to mix and match colors for your ideal aesthetic.

There’s no getting around the high price of many 100% silk sheet sets. This set from Promeed is more expensive than other types of sheets, like cotton, it’s a great deal compared to other silk sheets. For around the same price as a single silk sheet from other retailers, you’ll get a full bed setup: two pillowcases, one flat sheet and one fitted sheet. Promeed even provides a laundry bag with the set. Made with 23 momme Mulberry silk, these sheets will be durable and sleek.

A quick search on Amazon for “silk sheets” will bring up an abundance of options for silk and satin sheets. But, here’s a spoiler alert: Satin sheets are not real silk and are made from synthetic fiber, instead. We like this set from Amazon because it’s made with 100% Mulberry silk and has a 22 momme weight—a nice middle-ground. It comes in different pocket sizes, too, which range from 15 to 17 inches, ensuring you’ll get the best fit for your bed and won’t have to worry about the sheet slipping off or riding up. You can choose from nine different solid colors that include a few pastel tones.

If you want an extra thick, sumptuous silk sheet, you’ll want to go for this set from Thxsilk. The silk sheet set boasts a 25 momme weight, so it’s thicker than many of the other sets on this list, which typically are 19 or 22 momme silk. This also means the set will likely be more durable than others, and have a more substantial feel overnight. The set can fit mattresses up to 16 inches tall, and you can choose from seven color options. A fitted and flat sheet are included in the set, but instead of pillowcases, it comes with pillow shams. These have an envelope closure and outer hem that will make your bed look extra put together.

Lily Silk

Materials: 100% Mulberry silk | Mattress depth: Up to 16 inches | Sizes: All standard sizes

Calling all hot sleepers who prefer to sleep with a sheet, but want the thinnest one possible: This 19 momme Lily Silk sheet is the pick for you. The extra lightweight fabric has a smooth, glossy look and feel that won’t weigh you down. As I mentioned in our earlier pick from Lily Silk, I’ve tested Lily Silk’s 22 momme silk pajamas, and the silk was high quality with a smooth feel, making them one of my favorite sets. I’m confident the 19 momme sheets will be just as good.

Cozy Earth

Materials: 100% viscose from bamboo | Mattress depth: Up to 20 inches | Sizes: All standard sizes and split king

If you don’t want to buy satin synthetic sheets, but also don’t want to splurge on pricey silk sheets, this set from Cozy Earth is a good compromise. These sheets feel buttery soft and smooth, and they are about as close to silk as you can get. They are sleek but not quite as shiny or slick as satin, and they have a slightly heavier feel than silk. The set is a good choice for someone who wants a more substantial sheet. Plus they fit on extra thick mattresses up to 20 inches. I’ve tested these sheets and can vouch for their superior silky soft feel.

Amazon

Materials: 100% microfiber | Mattress depth: Up to 15 inches | Sizes: All standard sizes

100% silk sheets are pricey, and even the best deals will set you back at least a few hundred dollars, if not more. So if that’s not in your budget, consider satin sheets. This material offers a similar slick and smooth feel to silk, but typically at a much lower price. This set is one of the most popular satin sets on Amazon, and comes with flat and fitted sheets and two pillowcases. One bonus of these satin sheets is that they are machine washable with no special care instructions, unlike some of the silk sets on this list. With 26 colors to choose from, you’ll be sure to find a hue you like, too.

Why stop at silk sheets when you can also have a silk duvet and pillow shams for a complete look? This set from Thxsilk will complete the look of your bed with a silk duvet cover and two pillow shams. The set also includes a fitted sheet, making it perfect for those who like to skip the flat sheet and opt to sleep under just a duvet (though it may come in handy as a spare for an existing silk sheet set, too). We love that the duvet cover has eight ties to help keep it in place—most duvet covers only come with four anchor ties, meaning the duvet can shift inside the cover. Care is also easy since the set is machine washable. You can choose from 10 colors and sizes ranging from twin to California King.

When choosing silk sheets, I sorted through dozens of sheet sets online. I looked at well-known products and brands that I’m familiar with. I also searched sites, like Amazon, that carry some options to make sure I was checking the most popular vendors, as well. To narrow the list down, I chose products that have high ratings and reviews, or sheets from brands that have proven reliable and consistent in my previous experience testing pajamas and other sleep products.

In making our final picks, I relied on my knowledge from testing and writing about dozens of sheets, silk pajamas and silk pillowcases previously. I also tapped into my professional and educational background in textiles. I’ve worked in product development and quality assurance at a home textiles company and Nike. I also have degrees in apparel and textile design and mechanical engineering.

Silk sheets may be worth it for some people, but it comes down to your preferences, needs and what you’re looking to snuggle into at night. They can be a great option for those who have sensitive skin and have found other sheets uncomfortable. Silk sets typically have a cool-to-the-touch feel and help with temperature regulation meaning hot sleepers enjoy them. Finally, the smooth and luxurious texture of silk may be appealing to some.

If the higher price tag of a silk sheet set is within your budget, then real silk is the way to go. It’s breathable and helps regulate body temperature, benefits that come from natural silk and are hard to replicate with other silk-like materials. Satin sheets are made of synthetic fibers, which may trap heat and moisture. Silk is also a natural fiber, whereas satin is synthetic, which is a personal preference.

When buying silk sheets, you’ll want to make sure you’re buying 100% silk and not satin. Satin can look similar to silk, but it’s made with synthetic materials, so you won’t get the same benefits as silk. A good rule of thumb to go by: If the price is too good to be true, it’s likely satin. In that case, I recommend checking the fiber content so you know you’re getting real silk.

Be sure to review the care instructions to make sure they’re practical for your situation. Not following the wash instructions can shorten the silk sheet's life, and that’s true of even the highest quality silks. Finally, silk sheets’ slickness can make them more prone to shifting on the bed than sheets made of other materials, like cotton. That said, you’ll want to make sure you’re getting the correct pocket depth size for your mattress to ensure they’ll stay put.
